History
Silpakorn University established the first university library at Wang Tha Phra in 1964 as a resource to support the learning, teaching, research, and study of the faculties with teaching in art, design, and archaeology. The office was in the presidential office building, located behind Professor Silpa Bhirasri statue. Later, the library building was built on Na Phra Lan Road. Designed by Assistant Professor Suriya Rattanaphruek, which focused on preserving the view of the Throne Hall building, the library building becomes the backdrop behind the palace wall, allowing the round relief sculptures of Bai Sema to stand out. It officially opened on June 16, 1975. In 2006, the library was renovated for more modern and beautiful image. Under the supervision of Professor Sombat Wongasawanarumon, Faculty of Decorative Arts, with the concept of “Managing a small space by designing it to be as functional as possible.”
Later in 2015, the university undertook a project to renovate Silpakorn University, Wang Tha Phra campus. The entire Thapra Palace Library building was redesigned and renovated. It was designed by Assistant Professor Nantapon Junngurn, Faculty of Architecture, with the concept of creating a borderless learning space. To create a comprehensive and continuous connectivity of learning spaces within the building, and a learning space that gives learners views of significant outside surroundings, such as the Wang Tha Phra Gate, the work of the Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong, the Wall of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram, the buildings around Tha Chang Pier as well as people’s way of life and the outside environment. This can provide building users a sense of place and make them aware of Silpakorn University’s identity. The project was completed in 2021.
Thapra Palace Library is considered as a country’s leading art and design university library that has information resources in art, design, architecture, archaeology, history and culture, including new knowledges created by Silpakorn University, has a large amount of rare and valuable information resources accumulated, has physical learning spaces such as reading areas and other areas suitable for studying and working.
